Orphic Airs – Instruments for the Ages

Our First Historical Hummle

Our first historical Hummle, sans strings and tuners, a dulcimer ancestor from Sweden.

Our first historical Hummle, sans strings and tuners, a dulcimer ancestor from Sweden.

This model is a playable historical replica with a carved top and back, rosewood tuner knobs and a wide, white back-stripe.  It is strung like a 6-string dulcimer over the fingerboard with 7 additional strings flying unstopped over the outboard side of the body in a do-re-mi scale. US$600.

It is my intention to make a simplified flat-backed model using modern dulcimer construction methods and offer it in the US$300 range.  Feel free to inquire if you want me to begin such a project.  I am also considering the langeleik and the langspiel–the European dulcimer ancestors fascinate me and there are very few of them still in this country.
